Lungile receives welcome support from the public
Lungile’s right leg was amputated last year after she was diagnosed with bone cancer. Her wish was to get a prosthetic leg.
Residents from Boksburg and from as far as Alberton have lent a helping hand for Lungile Mkhwanazi after reading about her story in the Advertiser.
Upon the publication of the story, scores of people phoned Lungile’s mother, Mavis Mkhwanazi, to find out how they can assist.
“We received a call from a good Samaritan who said she wanted to donate her prosthetic leg to Lungile but unfortunately it was too short for her,” said the mother.
“We, however, received donations of R25 000 from generous people around Boksburg and also a church from Alberton, respectively. I have used that money towards Lungile’s transport to school and I bought her a school jersey.
“Tambo Memorial Hospital has also promised to give my child the prosthetic leg as we have been there numerous times for checkups.
Meanwhile, on Lungile’s birthday (February 27), Farrar Park resident, Thandaza Baduza, surprised her at school making her day special.
She bought her a pizza, sleeping gown, yoghurt and a Tropica juice.
“The reason why I wanted to surprise her on her birthday was that I was touched by her story so I wanted to show her that as a community we care and support her,” Baduza said.
The hospital has confirmed they will be giving her a prosthetic leg.
