Rotary Anns focus on changing the world through recycling
The Boksburg Lake Rotary Anns were the host for the conference, which took place at Little Nero's on February 16.
Over 100 women from Johannesburg, Polokwane and as far as Mozambique attended the annual Rotary Anns District 9400 conference.
Every year, different Rotary Anns from 12 clubs from across the country are chosen to host the conference.
The theme for this year’s conference was “Recycle and Reuse”.
According to Linda Stokes, from the Boksburg Lake Rotary Anns, district governor Ann-Colleen Deiner chose the theme with the hope of encouraging everyone to do their bit for the world.
Zethu Sibiya from Endangered Wild Life Trust and Shabeer Jhetam from Glass Recycling Company were the invited guest speakers who spoke about the importance of recycling.
Jhetam highlighted that recyclable plastics are plastic bottles, plastic trays or tubes, expanded polystyrene packaging (foam), high-impact polystyrene (hard), plastic bags and plastic bottles.
“Paper that can be recycled is cardboard boxes, office paper, magazines and brochures, newspapers, books, envelopes and liquid packaging.
“Paper that cannot be recycled is plasticised paper, photographs and overheads, dirty paper plates, waxed and greaseproof paper and more,” said Jhetam.
Sibiya spoke about EcoBrick and how people can create their own EcoBricks. An EcoBrick is a plastic bottle packed tightly with non-biodegradable waste.
These bottles are then used as building materials to create sustainable homes, schools and furniture.
Sibiya said to create your own EcoBrick you need a clean plastic bottle (rinse it out, it must be dry).
“Segregate your plastic before packing it into the bottles, use a stick to pack your plastic into the bottles. After building your brick you need to weigh it. When using a two-litre bottle the brick needs to be over 660g to be a good brick and a one-litre bottle should weigh 459g,” she said.
According to Sibiya, people can log on to ecobricks.org where they can actually track your brick and see where it’s going across the country.
