Strelitzia Service Centre still going strong

Strelitzia used to run clinic services, a second-hand shop, a library, various activities (line dancing, lawn bowls, gym trim, needlework) and a Meals on Wheels scheme.

Despite the Strelitzia Service Centre building in Cason having been sold, the elderly will also be welcomed.

This is according to Theuns Kruger from Hoeksteen Gemeente that has purchased the building.

Over the years the centre has been abuzz with a variety of fun activities for the local elderly.

Strelitzia was seen as the only service centre of its kind for the elderly in Ekurhuleni.

It also provided daily meals to members and arranges a host of special functions for the aged throughout the year.

“Our hearts are for the people, we will never send the elderly away,” said Kruger.

According to Kruger, the clinic, second-hand shop, sports gatherings and all the regular activities that took place at the centre will continue as usual.

“The centre is up and running and we are accommodating everyone,” said Kruger.

Kruger said Hoeksteens’ first priority is to do the work of God, which includes accommodating the elderly.

Kruger explained it is extremely important for the community to know the elderly will not be ‘thrown away’.

“Volunteers who use to volunteer at Strelitzia are still more than welcome to come and help out at the centre.”
