A day of well-being as the metro commemorates World Aids Day
As part of the commemoration activities, attendees also spent the day participating in various activities, including aerobics performed to music.
Thousands of employees of the Ekurhuleni metro converged on Boksburg to commemorate World Aids Day on November 30.
Annually World Aids Day is celebrated on December 1.
The crowd, estimated at over 3 500 people, representing all the local government departments, gathered at the Boksburg City Stadium in the morning, before taking part in a 5km and an 8km walk.
Teams of counsellors and nurses set up mobile clinics, consisting of tents and gazebos, at the stadium and offered free health services to the crowd.
These mobile clinics, including the health department, Clicks Pharmacy and Clinic Lakeside, saw hundreds of people standing in long queues to undergo HIV counselling and testing, screening for diabetes, blood pressure checks and advice on other health issues.
According to Mapula Mnisi, who runs the employee well-being programme of the department of human resources, which forms part of the human resources department at Ekurhuleni Metro, the objectives of the event was also to boost the staff’s well-being and create awareness among employees of ways to look after their health.
“As Ekurhuleni, we have partnered with local NGOs and businesses to look after the well-being of our employees. We annually hold this event as part of our programmes designed to improve physical, emotional, economic and social well-being of our staff.”
Mnisi added as part of their regular internal campaigns, her department encourages more employees to test for silent killers, such as diabetes.
She said the city’s health department also runs outreach programmes in the communities designed to help people stay healthy.
