The mayor of Ekurhuleni, Mzwandile Masina has welcomed the National Assembly’s decision to adopt the Constitutional Review Committee’s Report on the expropriation of land without compensation.
According to Phakamile Mbengashe, acting spokesperson of the mayor, the Constitutional Review Committee’s Report recommends that Section 25 of the Constitution must be amended.
Such amendment details making explicit that which is implicit in the Constitution with regards to expropriation of land without compensation as a legitimate option for land reform.
“This will then address the historic wrongs caused by the arbitrary dispossession of land and, in so doing, ensure equitable access to land and further empower the majority of South Africans to be productive participants in ownership, food security and agricultural reform programmes,” said the mayor.
“The adoption of this report is a practical and positive step towards undoing the injustices of the past and building a democratic society. In line with our pro-poor agenda as government and the prescripts of the Freedom Charter, we can no longer procrastinate on the issue of land reform in South Africa.
“In September this year, we took it upon ourselves to initiate the process of expropriating four pieces of land without compensation within the City, for the purpose of public interest and inclusive human settlement.
“Yesterday’s announcement further encourages us to pursue this effort expeditiously and ultimately restore the dignity of the masses of our people in Ekurhuleni.”
