Swift investigation by the EMPD, with the assistance of a security company, led to the arrests of nine suspects for stripping four impounded vehicles, located at the EMPD pound in Boksburg.
According to chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, on the morning of October 30, security personnel from LL Security, contracted to the City of Ekurhuleni, reported that four impounded vehicles had their engines missing.
“The matter was referred to the EMPD and a case was registered at Boksburg North police station,” said Kgasago.
He said during the afternoon of the same day, security officers from the security company, while patrolling around the EMPD pound situated on Reservoir Road, then noticed a vehicle parked not far from the pound entrance and decided to investigate.

“Inside the pound they found two men stripping two impounded sedans,” said Kgasago.
“The two men were arrested and they pointed to another two of their accomplices who were parked outside the pound who they claimed were the buyers and transporters of the stolen parts.
“The two EMPD Towing and Recovery Unit officers, Supt Abednigo Khumalo and Inspector Mirriam Matsepe, accompanied by the security officers, were also led to five more suspects who were apprehended in Tsakane, Katlehong and Wattville.
“These suspects were found with stolen vehicle parts which included engines, manifolds, gearboxes, car seats and starters.”

He said the rounding up of all the nine suspects took place between 5pm on October 30 and 2am on October 31.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.
