Emergency services calls for caution, ready to respond to flooding

Although no serious incidents were reported over the weekend, and conditions were forecast to improve, with clear skies expected across the city, the Ekurhuleni municipality has urged residents to be cautious during the wet season.

The nearly two days of heavy rains reportedly caused flash floods in some parts of Gauteng, resulting in traffic chaos on various roads in the province.

William Ntladi, district manager and media liaison for Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS), said the season normally brings with it torrential storms which have in the past produced disastrous floods on roads, in the low-lying areas in particular, in the province.

“Our emergency personnel remain on high alert and ready to respond effectively to any emergencies.

“We are in constant contact with the South African Weather Service, so that we can be aware and be prepared to deal with any issues caused by abnormal or severe weather conditions,” said Ntladi.

The railway bridges on Trichardts and Hospital roads, informal settlements and other low-lying areas in the city are points that will remain the emergency personnel’s main focus in Boksburg.

DEMS admitted that such areas have been presenting the department with challenges for quite some time now, as flooding occurs.

Ntladi urged motorists to refrain from crossing flooded roads and bridges and encouraged them to use alternative routes where possible.

Those who live or work in low-lying areas are advised to monitor the water levels and move to the higher ground when water levels rise.

Ntladi added that drowning of children is more prevalent during this time of the year. For that reason, he urged parents to ensure that their children stay away from rivers, ditches, uncovered manholes and ponds, especially during the rainy periods.
