The City of Ekurhuleni is unwavering in its quest for good governance and transparency.
This is according to Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina who told delegates at the Chartered Institute of Government Finance, Audit & Risk Officers (CIGFARO) conference that is currently underway at the Emperors Palace..
He said the City’s collection, management and distribution of financial resources was evidence of the seriousness with which it takes the principles of good governance and transparence as reflected in this year’s theme for the CIGFARO conference.
The conference’s theme is “Reclaiming governance and accountability in the public sector”.
“The City has increased its capital expenditure to above R6 billion in the last financial year.
“This is an increase from R4.1 billion to R6.7 billion and we will continue ramping it up in the outer years and the target is to reach 10 billion by 2021,” the mayor told the delegates.
“In light of the growing budget, the City has acquired more capacity to finance local development, infrastructure and economic growth projects.”
Whilst accountability and consequence management in the public sector was raised as a burning concern by the CIGFARO president Dr Krish Kumar, the mayor highlighted the City’s efforts to fight fraud and corruption.
He revealed that to date, seven senior officials, including two heads of department have been suspended due to allegations of impropriety.
The CIGFARGO conference, which continues until October 10, is held annually and this year the City of Ekurhuleni is the proud host and partner of this prestigious event that is attended by officials from municipalities, provincial and national government, legislatures, Chapter 9 institutions, state-owned enterprises and private sector organisations.
