Polar plunge for endangered bears

There are only between 2 000 and 2 400 of the spectacled bears left in the wild.

St Dominic’s girls and staff plunged into icy water to swim across the 25m length of the school swimming pool on July 10.

This exciting event, getting the adrenaline pumping towards a good cause, is called the “polar plunge”.

Learners are encouraged to make a donation towards the school’s adopted bears at the Johannesburg Zoo, Tamu and Valentine.

These are spectacled bears. They have pale markings around their eyes, resembling spectacles, hense their name. There are only between 2 000 and 2 400 of them left in the wild.
