Still no progress at Andries Scribante Haven

The Advertiser reported on the dire situation at Scribante several times this year, and although there were glimmers of hope, it all seems to have come crashing down these past few weeks.

The future still seems troubled for the residents of Andries Scribante in Cason.

As has been the case for a number of years, the elderly residents are still forced to use the stairs to get to and from their flats. Some of them have to struggle up three flights of stairs with wheelchairs, walkers and shopping bags and attempt not to hurt themselves in the process.

The old lifts were removed after months of back-and-forth complaints made by residents and ward councillor Marius de Vos to council.

Council promised that the lifts would be replaced and working by now, but they are yet to be delivered from China.

“Best date for the lifts is end August, when they will arrive,” said project manager Pumzile Naytlo.

“It is my view that the goalposts have been moved again in respect of the installation of the lifts,” said de Vos.

According to de Vos it is just common courtesy to be updated by the metro on why the lifts have not been shipped from China and when they will arrive in South Africa.

“The unbearable conditions under which the old people are trapped on the top floors of the building will continue unabated in the absence of proof of the order placed to manufacture the lifts.”

De Vos said he will put more pressure on the metro to speed up the delivery of the lifts so that installation can take place.

The Advertiser also received a complaint from a frustrated Scribante resident who has not had access to hot water for several weeks.

The resident stated that the geysers at Scribante have not been working for weeks on end. The problem was apparently reported, but to no avail.

De Vos immediately sent the complaint to the council, but there has been no change.

He informed the resident and the Advertiser that a request to replace the geysers has been put forward.
