Watch: Windmill Park Primary School gets a new coat of paint on Mandela Day
Mandela Day is an annual international day that is observed in honour of the late former president Nelson Mandela, who stood for peace, justice, equality and a better life for all.
People from all walks of life celebrated the centenary of the birth of an icon, Nelson Mandela, on July 18.
Windmill Park Primary School was abuzz with excited learners who were happy to see members from Boksburg Correctional Services and Sanlam (Boksburg) spending their time at the school.
Officials, probationers and parolees from the correctional services and members from Sanlam (Boksburg) spent their 67 minutes painting 13 classrooms.
It was a joyous day as learners sang and danced. Some also recited their favourite quotes from Mandela.
Ronald Nhlapo, manager for special programmes at Boksburg Correctional Services, said: “For the past few years we have been celebrating Mandela Day in other areas in Ekurhuleni, so this year we decided to assist Windmill Park Primary School.
“We have partnered with Sanlam and we are happy to announce that we will be donating 105 school shoes to the learners of Windmill Park on July 31.
“As part of the Mandela Day initiative, we have painted 13 foundation phase classrooms, fixed and repaired learners’ bathrooms, refurbished 50 desks and built a protection unit for the television at the school.”

According to the prison spokesperson, Sello Modise, the visit was to show support because they understood the importance of serving the public.
“As a department we don’t only reach out to communities on Mandela Day, but we are always engaging in such projects within the communities,” Modise said.
Vuyo Ningiza, from Sanlam (Boksburg), said: “We are happy to be part of this event as well as to give back to the community. Every cent we make at Sanlam we plough back to the communities by supporting schools, old age homes and many more because without the support of the public, we are nothing.”

Meanwhile, a few blocks away from Windmill Park Primary School, Crane Worldwide Logistics was also doing its bit for Mandela Day by visiting Mpumelelo Day Care Centre.
The Pamona-based company donated food, party packs and three big birthday cakes to three children at the centre whose birthdays fell on the day.

Delon Aroojunan from Crane Worldwide Logistics said: “We have spent 67 minutes for Mandela Day at Mpumelelo Day Care Centre playing and feeding children at the centre. We are happy to give back to communities that are less fortunate and to make a difference in the lives of these children.”
