Successful fund-raiser held for little Stefan
The struggle, however, continues for the battling little boy who was diagnosed with Mowat Wilson Syndrome,
A fund-raiser for Stefan du Toit, who was diagnosed with Mowat Wilson Syndrome, was held on May 26 at the NG-kerk Boksburg Wes on Rietfontein Road.
Stefan was born on January 26, 2016, and weighed a healthy 3.4kg. He was then diagnosed with the syndrome which led to numerous hospitalisations and operations.
Stefan’s mother, Lynette du Toit, explains that the fund-raiser was to raise awareness in the community.
“There are many people with genetic disorders,” said du Toit.
“As a community we should stand together and trust and believe that we will be blessed through any circumstances,” said du Toit.
About 70 people attended the fund-raiser and an amount of R11 300 was raised. The fund-raiser was also entertaining as Victory 5, a singing group, took to the stage.
Donated items were auctioned to help raise funds.
Du Toit also shared her son’s story and some of their experiences.
Dr Engela Honey was the guest speaker as she has a special interest in children with genetic disorders.
“Some of the funds raised will be donated to another child with the same disorder. With the remaining funds we will buy a new stroller for Stefan, as his current one is too small,” said du Toit.
“We believe that he will one day be able to walk, but for now we are in dire need of a proper stroller. As parents we cannot thank enough everyone who attended the fund-raiser.
“We have been blessed with a huge support system and anyone who sends a message, gives a donation, regardless how small, all contributes and helps us in this journey.”
She said they will always have immense medical fees to cover, as the medical aid does not pay for everything and the rest must be covered out of the family’s savings.
“It is a continued struggle, but we are so grateful for everyone’s help and our little boy is doing so well.”
After two years of struggling to eat, Stefan is now eating and although he takes a little longer to learn things, he is making wonderful progress.
Du Toit said their family could not have gone through his whole process without love.
“We have realised our son is not a punishment, but he is worthy and perfect in his own right. We trust there is a bigger plan ahead for him.”
