SABRIC lauds call for special meeting to look into CIT heists

The Portfolio Committee has already raised a number of serious concerns about the prevailing high rate of CIT attacks gripping the country.

The South African Banking Risk Information Centre (Sabric) has applauded the decision taken by the National Assembly Portfolio Committee on Police  to hold a special meeting on cash-in-transit (CIT) heists, scheduled for June 13.

Boksburg was the scene of such a CIT heist last week that took place on the corner of North Rand and Atlas roads.

“As an organisation whose members comprise CIT companies, Sabric is gravely concerned and alarmed about the crisis proportions CIT attacks have reached.

“This negatively impacts on the country and economy, investor confidence, our member banks and CIT companies, the public and society”, said Kalyani Pillay, CEO of Sabric.

Pillay said Sabric is actively engaged in collaborative threat surveillance, risk detection and tactical support with relevant authorities.

“However, more needs to be done. This is why we welcome the proactive oversight and leadership by the Portfolio Committee during its meeting with SAPS national leadership, held on May 17.”

According to Pillay, it is encouraging that during this meeting, the Portfolio Committee proactively raised a number of serious concerns about the prevailing high rate of CIT attacks gripping the country.

Sabric is calling for such heists to be treated as a priority crime, and for the systematic compilation of cases that are prosecutable by the NPA and establishing dedicated provincial CIT investigation teams.

“Parliament has a vital Constitutional mandate to perform legislative and policy oversight and provide a forum for dialogue on issues of national importance.

“The current scourge in CIT attacks represents threatening proportions.

“Parliament should therefore be commended for its proactive approach in this regard, in ensuring that swift and sustainable solutions are found and implemented by all role players and stakeholders.”
