Do not dump animals outside the SPCA property

Abandoning or dumping animals is an offence under the Animals Protection Act 71 of 1962 and, if found guilty in a court of law, can result in a fine and a criminal record.

The Boksburg SPCA is urging the public to refrain from dumping animals outside the SPCAs property.

According to the Boksburg SPCA manager, Maggie Mudd, two young dogs were dumped outside the SPCAs gate last week.

This is the same gate that clearly has the SPCA after-hours emergency number printed on a large notice board for everyone to see.

“Simply dumping the animals outside the gate can result in animals that run away and they can get knocked over and either be killed or injured,” said Mudd.

“Our society is very close to a main road. The SPCA also does not know if the dumped animal is a stray or needs to remain in our pound for the official pound period or if it is simply unwanted.”

Mudd said this results in all the animals that they find abandoned outside the SPCA having to wait the seven day pound period and this is unfair on an animal that is being donated.

“We end up not having details about the animal such as where it comes from. If it’s a stray we need to know how long the person has had the animal.

“Then again, if it’s being donated we need to know what is the animal’s name, how old is the animal, is it good with other dogs, and is it good with children.

“All of these details help the SPCA to match the animal to a prospective new home.”

“This is a plea to everyone out there to please bring in any stray or unwanted animals during our office hours.

“If that is not possible for whatever reason, then phone the after-hours emergency number and allow our staff to take the animal/s into the SPCA.

“The person dropping off the animal will be asked to fill in an admission form that requires their name, address and contact number and as many details as they know about the animal,” Mudd said.

Operating hours are Monday to Thursday from 8.30am to 4.30pm, and on Friday from 8.30am to 4pm and Saturday from 8.30am to noon.
