Former first lady of Boksburg dies age 77

Charlotte married Beyers on March 9, 1968. They had, therefore, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year.

A former first lady of Boksburg, Charlotte de Klerk (nee Penberthy), died at home in Libradene on April 8, aged 77.

She was the wife of Beyers de Klerk, who was the mayor of Boksburg from 1985 to 1988.

Charlotte was born on June 7, 1940, in Nelspruit and attended various schools in the area, as well as a convent in Swaziland and Hoërskool Erasmus in Bronkhorstspruit before completing her matric in Nelspruit.

Her first marriage was to Pieter Bezuidenhout and the couple had three children, Gert, Pieter and Mariana.

The couple, Charlotte and Beyers, first lived in Benoni but then moved to Boksburg and lived in several suburbs, including Parkdene, Boksburg West, Parkrand, Libradene and Beyers Park.

Their only child from this union, Chantal Mc Luckie, said her mom was a keen gardener.

“She was involved with creating the large rose and vegetable garden at the entrance to Libradene Security Village,” Chantal said.

“The produce and flowers from this magnificent project were donated to various old age facilities in Boksburg, including Cosmos, Huis Dien Bothma and Scribante.

“My mom dearly loved her grandchildren and lived her life as a respected citizen of Boksburg.

“She always supported my dad in all his ventures.”

Chantal described her mom as a heroin, a role model and a true lady to the very end.

Charlotte is survived by her husband, children, Gert, Pieter and Chantal, and grandchildren, Chelsey, Sinead, Kristen, Devan, Kathryn, Victoria and Andreatte.
