Family injured by shopping centre glass is ‘struggling’ – dad
A mom and her two sons, aged four and eight, who were injured when a window shattered at East Point Shopping Centre on Tuesday are “struggling”, according to the father Mandla Mkwaqa.
The Daveyton family were at the centre when a strong wind and rain hit at about 5.30pm.
“I went to fetch the car while my family waited just inside the entrance,” Mkwaqa said.
“When I came back I saw glass everywhere but couldn’t find my wife and sons.”
The three had been badly injured as glass shattered from a few metres above their heads.
ER24 responded to the incident and said they had heard the wind had smashed trolleys into the window.
“It was not trolleys. The trolleys were put there afterwards by security guards trying to cordon the area off,” Mkwaqa said.
“I believe it was just the wind.”
His wife suffered bruising and his sons had to have stitches following the incident.
Mkwaqa said he is seeking legal advice on the matter.
“I can’t just let this lie. I am planning to go to the centre today (Thursday) and see if I can speak to someone in management.”
He added that management had promised to come to the hospital but nobody had arrived by the time the family was released, yesterday.
A spokesperson for the managing agents of the centre confirmed they had made contact with the family, but not seen them yet.
He also said trolleys were not the cause of the window breaking.
The centre will release the investigation findings as soon as these are available.
