Be mindful of flooding as heavy rain persists
Following consistent rain across Ekurhuleni since last night and over the past few weeks, the Disaster and Emergency Management Services department (DEMS) has urged residents and businesses to mindful of flooding, especially in flood prone and low-lying areas.
DEMS and the South African Weather Service is cautioning motorists and pedestrians to be on high alert and avoid crossing low lying bridges and swollen streams where water is more than ankle deep.
Parents are also urged to accompany their children to school if they have to walk through trenches, water tunnels, streams or culverts.
“It is advisable to listen to weather reports and obey these warnings issued by DEMS,” said William Ntladi, DEMS spokesperson.
“We are on high alert for any emergencies. Communities affected by flooding or anyone facing a life-threatening emergency, should phone our call centre immediately, so that we can intervene swiftly – every second counts, so call us immediately.”

Ntladi said drowings increase in summer and parents should, therefore, look after their children at swimming pools and other such areas and always know their children’s whereabouts.
Take note of the following:
* In case of emergencies phone the DEMS call centre on (011) 458 0911, dial 112 from a cellphone or call the national emergency number, 10177.
* Ensure that you have the emergency call centre contact numbers readily and clearly displayed, at home and at work, and save the number on speed dial in your cellphone.
* Speak clearly when reporting an emergency.
* Provide the operator with all the necessary details required.
* Do not end the conversation with the operator until all questions have been answered.
