Sunward Park arms cache: Dad released on R50 000 bail

The dad and daughter arrested in Sunward Park on November 8 in connection with illegal weapons and ammunition and trying to bribe a police officer appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, November 16.

Jacobus Nortje (50), of Morkel Street, Sunward Park, was released on R50 000 bail, with conditions, and Monique Basson was released on R2 000 bail.

The Gauteng Flying Squad arrested the pair after uncovering a cache of arms and live ammunition at Nortje’s house in Morkel Street, Sunward Park.

They had been following up on information about a man believed to be dealing in gold and other precious metals in Boksburg.

On the corner of Oberon and Nicholson roads, they stopped Nortje, who matched the description of the suspect they were looking for, and searched the car. They found gold, pieces of precious metal and live rounds of 9mm ammunition. The rounds did not match the firearm Nortje produced a licence for.

The police then proceeded to Nortje’s home, where they found more firearms and ammunition. The K9 Unit was then called in and more live ammunition was found.

Nortje’s daughter, Basson, was arrested after she offered the police a R98 800 bribe.

Basson’s case was postponed to December 6 and Nortje’s to January 17.
