This is according to a written reply to the DA’s questions in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature.
The Gauteng Department of Community Safety MEC, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane indicated that the planning phase for the building of a new police station has not been initiated.
The MEC revealed that a needs assessment for the new police station was signed a year ago on October 14 and forwarded to the Division Supply Chain Management.
According to Janet Semple MPL, DA Political Head for Boksburg East Constituency, the estimated budget according to the needs assessment is about R53 million for at least 3164 cm2.
“Furthermore, the MEC highlighted that this project does not form part of the Long Term Infrastructure Development Plan: 2015/2020, Capital Works of the Division Supply Chain Management,” said Semple.
She said there are no plans and no timelines on when the new police station is going to be constructed.
“There is a need for a new Boksburg North police station to be built as this one is old, small and there is not enough parking space.
“The environment of this police station is not conducive for the provision of services to the public.
“This police station is congested and there are also not enough resources such as police vehicles to assist in curbing crime in the area.
“We will continue to engage with MEC Nkosi-Malobane to prioritise the building of a new Boksburg North police station.”
