Watch: Treadmill challenge for MND in full swing
Hitting the long road, well sort of, for a worthy cause.
Former Boksburg resident Morné Basson set up his treadmill in front of the Superspar at The Square Shopping Centre, in Rietfontein Road, and ran his 42.2km for the day on October 3.
This forms part of his 31-day treadmill challenge to create awareness and fund-raising for people suffering from motor neurone disease (MND).
Basson will be running 42.2km every day on a treadmill for 31 consecutive days.
He kicked of his #31marathons31days treadmill challenge at Killarney Mall on September 28.
All funds raised will go to Basson’s NPO, MBIHealth, which supports the fight against MND and assists MND patients.
When the Advertiser met with him on day six of his challenge at The Square, he was positive and full of energy.
At that moment, he had already run 211km of 1 308.2km.
He had biltong and lots of fluid with him to keep him going.

The reason Basson decided to do the challenge on a treadmill was to experience what it feels like to be on the same spot for 42.2km and not going anywhere.
“MND patients are trapped in their own body, with nowhere to go. So, for the entire 42.2km, I am not allowed off the treadmill – no matter what,” explained Basson.
“I have to be in that small space for the entire duration.”
Asking what keeps his mind set on his goal, he answered: “The people with MND motivate me and keep me going.”
He will be doing the rest of the marathons in Gauteng at various shopping malls.
Show your support when you spot him somewhere – it’s all for a good cause.
Basson is running a competition where a lucky winner can win a brand-new Toyota C-HR worth R318 000.
Tickets to the lucky draw cost R200 each and only 5 500 tickets are available.
To enter, email Morné for more information (morne@mbihealth.co.za) or send a WhatsApp or SMS (072 726 9528) and instructions will be sent to you.
All proceeds to go to MBIHealth.
On day 31, which will be October 28, Basson will be at Carnival Mall to end his challenge on a high note.
He’ll start his marathon at 8am and give a motivational talk at noon.
There will be a nice atmosphere with music. School sports teams are invited to attend the talk, as well as anyone who wants to learn more about MND.
Basson thanks all his sponsors for their support and those who have, so far, made a contribution to this worthy cause.
