Suspect arrested minutes after robbing pensioner of firearm

A suspect who hit an elderly man multiple times over the head with a firearm in his house this morning (September 11), was arrested minutes after the incident.

The elderly man noticed an unknown man downstairs in his house in First Street, Boksburg North, around 9.30am, and proceeded down the stairs armed with a firearm.

Halfway down the stairs, the suspect saw him and grabbed the firearm from him.

The suspect allegedly gained access to the house through the garage door.

“A struggle ensured during which the suspect hit the pensioner over the head several times with the firearm,” said Boksburg North SAPS communications officer Capt Juanita Coetzer.

The suspect then fled down the street.

Coetzer said witnesses saw him running from the house and chased him. The suspect is reported to have pointed the firearm at the witnesses as he was fleeing.

According to Coetzer, members of the community and the CPF chairperson of Boksburg North apprehended the suspect and he was then arrested by police.

The pensioner was taken to hospital for treatment.

The police confiscated the firearm and the suspect was taken to Boksburg North Police Station.
