Watch: Youth get onto the same page for literacy month
September is National Literacy Month and the Reiger Park Library, Lakeside Primary and Reiger Park Secondary kicked off this special occasion on a positive note.

To promote the culture of reading among residents, the youth in particular, the library partnered with these schools and organised a march aimed at encouraging the youth to read books, thereby improving literacy among young people.
The event on Friday, August 31, saw hundreds of learners, teachers, librarians and other guests marching along the streets of the township carrying placards and banners and chanting slogans in support of reading.
The march started at Lakeside Primary and ended at the library, where speakers reminded the crowd about the importance of reading, while also encouraging the youth to make use of the available library resources and programmes, to enrich their minds.
“Make books your friends. Reading is really important because if you can’t read you can’t study further, you can’t do maths. Reading is actually the core of everything. There are a lot of treasures in books,” said librarian Lydia Simons.
In attendance also was an ATKV representative, Audrey Eustace, who is a friend of the Reiger Park Library. She encouraged the youth to become library members and reap the benefits.
The initiative was also supported by the Reiger Park Cancer Support Group members.
