MMC urges street sweepers to study

Member of Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Environment and Waste Management Services Clr Ndosi Shongwe has encouraged women in her department to pursue an education.

This was during an event to honour women in environment and waste management services, in Boksburg, on August 26.

Each employee of Ekurhuleni is entitled to R10 000 for tuition fees and over R3 000 for prescribed books fees, as stipulated in the study bursary scheme for employees policy.

“It cannot be normal that you were employed five years ago to pick up litter, cut grass and sweep the streets and five years later you are still doing the same job.

“Today I want each one of you to do a self-introspection and I also challenge you to improve yourselves through education,” said Shongwe.

Shongwe emphasised that the gathering of women to commemorate Women’s Month can’t be about singing and dancing every year, but should be about empowering each other and making an impact.

“We have a dedicated unit within the human resources department dealing with education, training and development of employees. Therefore I urge you to approach them – they will guide you to identify training needed in the department.”

Thoko Siwela, who works at the Boksburg Parks depot, said: “I have been working as a grass cutter, driving the lawn tractor, for over 10 years, but now I’m willing to study so I can do administration.

“I will be approaching the department of human resources for more assistance in achieving my dream.”
