Inmates embrace the entrepreneurial spirit during motivational talk
The Gauteng Department of Correctional Services recently held a motivational talk and entrepreneurship information session for inmates at the Boksburg Prison's Centre A.
The session, described as fruitful and informative, saw several speakers inspire, educate and motivate the prisoners.
The Gauteng Department of Correctional Services’ Patrick Thobejane said the purpose of the session was to encourage inmates, aspiring to become business people, not to give up in their quest to fulfil such ambitions.
This is in light of the challenges ex-offenders encounter when they return to their respective communities.
Among the speakers who gave motivational speeches in the session dubbed “From Offender to Entrepreneur”, were author, businessman and ex- offender, Gayton McKenzie; musician-cum-businessman and ex-offender Nathi Mankayi and author, TV/Radio personality, coach and entrepreneur Sibusiso Leope, popularly known as DJ Sbu.
They focused on abandoning a life of crime, starting your own business, overcoming obstacles and making it against all odds.
First on the podium was McKenzie, who based his talk on his experiences of being behind bars and how he used the skills acquired through the programmes offered in prison to turn over a new leaf and better his life.
McKenzie reportedly said he grabbed the second chance given to him in life with both hands. He also discouraged offenders from being involved in what he called “time-wasting activities”, such as gangs and smuggling.
“Correctional services helped me to find myself and become what I am today. Sometimes we forget that we have wronged the community and it is we who should show remorse, change our evil ways rather than complaining about petty things,” said McKenzie.
The Nomvula hit-maker, who is also a painter and a sculptor, Nathi Mankayi reiterated what McKenzie said, stressing the importance of self-change.
As an ex-offender himself, he shared how he landed in a correctional facility while he was still a young boy.
He also gave a brief overview of how he abandoned a life of crime and used his God-given talent to become a successful, respected businessman and musician.
He also told the crowd that his experience behind bars taught him key lessons about life.
Mankayi spiced up the event with a performance of three of his popular songs.
DJ Sbu then took the podium and spoke on several topics, including thriving in turbulent times and secrets for high achievement.
The session also featured a wide range of entertainment items offered by offenders and guests.-@FanieFLK
