Probus Club of Boksburg Lake holds its last meeting

After 28 years of existence, the Probus Club of Boksburg Lake held its last meeting on July 10, at Alan Woodrow Park Retirement Village.

According to the club president, Gordon Morrison, membership figures have dropped drastically over the last few years and they had a total of only 18 members in the past year.

At the final meeting the club welcomed Pieter van Niekerk, head of public relations at the South African Guide Dog Association (SAGDA), and his guide dog, O’Reilly (9), as their special guests.

O’Reilly, a golden retriever, has been van Niekerk’s guide for nearly nine years and will soon retire to become a pet companion.

Van Niekerk shared some information about SAGDA while O’Reilly interacted with club members.

Morrison, who has been a member of the club for 20 years, said he will miss the fellowship the most.

“Four years ago, we joined forces with Alan Woodrow Park Retirement Village and this kept the club going,” said Morrison.

Gordon Morrison and Lesley Smith say they will miss the fellowship at the club.

The club comprised three management members: Morrison (82), Barry Mee (76), as secretary, and Eric Heubener (89), the treasurer and programme organiser.

Heubener has been in the hospital for a month and was only recently discharged.

“We thought it is best to close the club due to the low membership figures and the age of the members,” said Morrison.

“I made friends here and built good memories. We’ve been able to get good speakers.”

Any monies the club has left will be donated to Alan Woodrow Park Retirement Village.
