Mercy Haven in Boksburg shuts down

Mercy Haven, which has been in existence for over 10 years, has shut down.

Based in the Boksburg CBD and run as an NGO, Mercy Haven provided emergency accommodation for abused women and children.

The women were taken in at the centre and were provided with basic needs, such as nutrition, primary health care and clothing, education and developmental assistance and, where possible, they were reunited with their families.

According to Gauteng Department of Social Development spokesperson, Mbangwa Xaba, the centre was shut down due to non-compliance.

“The department warned the board members to comply with the rules and regulations in accordance to functioning as an NGO, otherwise the department will be forced to withdraw their funding, but they failed to comply.

“The board members then decided to shut down Mercy Haven,” Xaba said.

Xaba said the women and children at Mercy Haven were moved to a place of safety.
