At the time the intruder along with his accomplice were breaking into a house on Taurus Road, Sunward Park.
According to Boksburg SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Cebisa Maseko, the now deceased and his partner in crime entered the property and attempted to force open the door.
“The homeowner, who was at the time asleep, told the police that he heard the commotion.
“He fired two shots at the door, killing one of the suspects.”
The other suspect fled the scene and it remains unclear if he was armed during the attempted break-in.
Police were called and they registered a case of house breaking and an inquest case.
