WATCH: One shot dead in brazen robbery at airport

A man was shot dead and his fellow passengers robbed as they were driving to OR Tambo International Airport.

This is according to National Police spokesperson Major General Sally de Beer.

“The incident took place on Monday afternoon (May 15) on Ring Road,” said de Beer.

“Preliminary reports indicate the driver was transporting a group of six business people from Johannesburg and en route at least one vehicle attempted to flag him down.

She said a man driving a Hyundai was shot dead by a group of criminals while driving towards the airport.

“The driver continued towards the airport. Reportedly, as he took the off-ramp from the highway to the airport, his vehicle was blocked by two other vehicles, including a black Volkswagen Golf, before he was shot and fatally wounded.”

Yesterday afternoon OR Tambo International Airport management issued a statement that it aware of this deeply concerning matter.

Management confirmed the incident took place off the R24, along Ring Road, which leads to the airport’s arrivals and departures roadway.

Investigations continue.
