Rotary hosts a successful Donkey Derby fund-raiser
Rotary Club Boksburg Lake and their Anns Club held an entertaining donkey derby fund-raiser, much enjoyed by a hall full of attendees at the Masonic Hall, on April 8.
The fund-raiser was supported by Boksburg, Benoni Aurora, Benoni Aurora Anns, Benoni Van Ryn and Edenvale.
Very different from the well-known formal Rotary dinners, families and friends noisily went about the business of encouraging their ‘donkeys’ (people dressed to resemble a donkey) to help raise funds for the club’s various community projects.
There were seven races, including a Presidents Handicap, in which Rotary presidents and presidents elect ran against each other.
This race was won by Cheryl Gallager, president of Benoni Van Ryn.
The organiser of the event, past president Tony Baker, flew in from Rwanda to lead the event with his wife, past president Jenny Baker.
