Something has to be done in Griffon Avenue

Concerned resident, Impala Park, writes:

I am a resident of Griffon Avenue, Impala Park, and want to raise the issue of speeding in this road.

There is a stop street at the Gnat Street entrance, but motorists just choose to ignore it.

As I am writing this letter a car came speeding from down the street and did not stop at the stop street.

On Saturday, January 21, at 10.30pm, we were travelling home and on the corner in Griffon Avenue (entering Griffon Avenue from Elizabeth Road side) the driver of a red Corsa bakkie was speeding and lost control, almost colliding with us head on.

Luckily, no one was hurt but the speeding in Griffon Avenue is a problem.

There are no warning signs of a sharp turn or chevron signs to warn motorists of the sharp turn when travelling in Griffon Avenue towards Elizabeth Road.

I would like to see something done about this; speed bumps would slow down speeding motorists.

The other issue is, when travelling from Elizabeth Road turning into Lycoming Street towards the stop street, the view when turning right into Griffon Avenue is totally blocked by overhanging trees which makes it impossible to see oncoming traffic.

It could also be a risk stopping at that stop street, not knowing if a criminal is hiding there.

I don’t know if it is the responsibility of the owner or the municipality to keep the visibility clean for motorists.

The Advertiser contacted acting EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Kobeli Mokheseng and this was the response received:

On Monday, January 30, at 5pm, our speed enforcement unit made a survey in Griffon Avenue, Impala Park, in Boksburg, and the findings were:

* The speed limit is 60km/h.

* It is a dual carriage way with single lanes on both directions.

* It is a very quiet suburban street which is used only by local residents.

* A stop sign placed/erected there also serves as a speed reducing mechanism.

* It is not possible to erect speed bumps because of a short distance between the stop sign and both ends of Griffon Avenue.
