Police arrest escaped prisoner

One of the six suspects who escaped from the Boksburg Magistrate's Court's cells last year has been re-apprehended and arrested in Soweto, on January 16.

According to the Boksburg North SAPS communications officer, Capt Juanita Coetzer, the suspect was arrested for housebreaking and theft that took place on Santana Road, Witfield, on September 24, 2015.

“He escaped the same day he was arrested and appeared in court on May 19, 2016,” said Coetzer.

“With a warrant of arrest, Boksburg North SAPS detectives followed up on information about where the suspect might be, in Soweto. They raided the premises at about 9.45am.”

She said the team of detectives, Sgt Kenneth Phaka, Const Goodman Baloyi and Const Donald Khoza, surrounded the house.

“When the suspect saw them, he jumped the back fence. Officers gave chase.

“The suspect drew his knife and stormed at Const Khoza, who defended himself and disarmed the suspect. He produced his firearm, and the suspect tried to grab it from him. However, Const Khoza was still in control of his firearm when the suspect repeatedly punched the member in the face.”

Coetzer said that Const Khoza fired a warning shot, but the suspect stormed again to attack the member.

“He then fired at the suspect and slightly wounded him in the arm and leg.”

The community allegedly gathered around the policemen, and the members loaded the suspect into their vehicle and drove off.

They informed their seniors of the incident and drove straight to Tembisa Hospital with the suspect.

The suspect appeared in court on Tuesday, January 17, and was taken to Boksburg Prison.

“This team did an excellent job of finding and arresting a wanted suspect,” said Coetzer.
