EMPD clamp down on ‘illegal’ street machanics, car dealers

The EMPD By-Law Enforcement Unit in conjunction with Urban Management officials have embarked on a special operation targeting those who without authorization display vehicles for sale on public roads, repair vehicles on sidewalks as well as those who use residential spaces to spray-paint and panel-beat vehicles.

EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said all the hotspots were first identified and between Monday (November 14) and Friday (November 18) the law enforcers swooped on their targets where a total of 110 vehicles were towed away.

“First was Germiston, Elsburg and Wadeville along Winnie Havelof, Mossie, Dekema Rand, Knox Linton Jones, Meyer, Short, Simpson and Railway streets where sixty-five vehicles were confiscated.

“In midweek, the focus was on Boksburg along Leeuwpoort and Cason streets where 18 vehicles were towed away.”

Kgasago said that on Friday the target was Springs with the hotspots along Ermelo, Lewis, 3rd Avenue, Springs and Nigel roads where 27 vehicles were impounded.

“The public is warned that any out-door advertising, displaying of vehicles on our public roads and engaging in vehicle repairs in areas not zoned for business without approval is an offence.

“The EMPD shall not hesitate to come down heavily on those who commit such offenses.”
