Mrs Africa finalist, East Rand Mall John Dory’s treat matric learners
A total of 14 matric learners from the Phumelela Outreach Programme were treated to a free breakfast, on October 16, courtesy of East Point's John Dory’s.
In the efforts of giving back to the community, Mrs Africa finalist Wilma Ryan in conjunction with John Dory’s owner, Quinton Cronje, made the day possible for these learners.
The Phumelela Outreach Programme students attend classes every Saturday at Holy Rosary School. The learners are from various schools around Boksburg and Germiston.
As part of Ryan humanitarian assistance in her community she is working closely with Dignity Dreams, an organisation that provides feminine sanitary wear for girls who can’t afford them.

She has also handed out desk bags to the learners at the Phumelela Outreach Programme.
“I want to empower the youth to work hard in their education because it will change their lives for the better. By distributing the dignity packs I want girls to celebrate their periods, not to be ashamed to go to school because they don’t have sanitary pads.
“The main reason behind the breakfast at John Dory’s was that I wanted to give the learners an opportunity to be in a restaurant, because some of them have never been to one.
“These matriculants will be starting their final exams soon so they need to be refreshed and rejuvenated to face the exams,” Ryan said.
Cronje said the breakfast outing was a good stepping stone for the learners to be exposed to environments like these.
“In the process of being here they are learning on how to present themselves in a restaurant and how things are done in a restaurant for those who want to venture into businesses,” Cronje said.
