Boksburg girl shares awesome Miss Teen Social Entrepreneur SA experience

Boksburg girl Megan Venter (16) described her whole experience in the Miss Teen Social Entrepreneur South Africa pageant as ''fun''.

Megan took part in the event, the grand finale of which was held at Carnival City, on September 8.

Although she did not win, she doesn’t regret taking part in the pageant.

The competition focused on empowering teenage girls from Grades Eight to 12, by developing their social entrepreneurial skills and awareness of social responsibility.

Megan, who attends Boksburg High School, is an outgoing and incredibly ambitious young woman.

The teen is currently one of the modelling coaches at Younique Modelling Academy and is hoping to have another class, to help young women to hone their modelling skills, by the end of the year.

Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) Dignity Dreams was the beneficiary of the pageant.

Dignity Dreams manufactures and distributes sanitary wear for underprivileged schoolgirls across the country.

All the finalists who took part in the pageant had to raise funds towards the dignity packs, which can be washed and reused.

“Some women cannot afford to buy sanitary towels because of their disadvantaged backgrounds, so, by being part of this great initiative I made a difference in the lives of these women,”.

”Sanitary pads should not be a luxury, girls should not use socks, newspaper and toilet paper or miss school during their menstrual cycle because they cannot afford sanitary towels,” Megan said.

As part of being a finalist for the Miss Teen Social Entrepreneur South Africa pageant, the Boksburg High learner had to spread the word out on social media for people to donate the Dignity Packs.

She also asked a photographer to sponsor a photo shoot and people had to buy tickets to win the photo shoot prize.

Megan again sold over 200 cupcakes at Younique Modelling Academy.

Models at the same academy also had to dress in wacky outfits to help her raise money for the dignity packs.

“I would like to thank Cecilia van Eerden, who is the founder of Younique Model Academy, and my family for supporting me throughout my journey,” Megan said.

”My whole experience has been an awesome one, as I now have a have a sense of compassion for those who are less fortunate. I have always thought it was some one else’s problem, not realising that everyone needed to make a difference in the lives of the needy.”

She plans to open her own modelling school in the coming years.
