People dive for cover as BaSotho men allegedly open fire on residents

Residents of Angelo informal settlement were forced to dive for cover when a group of about 200 stone-throwing men, believed to be Lesotho nationals, carrying firearms, ran amok in the settlement, leaving two people wounded.

According to a community member who asked to remain anonymous, he noticed a group of BaSotho men converging on the informal settlement – and suddenly, all hell broke loose; there was gunfire and flying stones everywhere.

Dozens of police officers from several local police stations, including the riot police, were dispatched to the scene on Monday, following the accident involving the BaSotho men and local residents.

It is unclear what was behind the violence, however, both the police and residents believe that it could be linked to the arrests of the Basotho men accused of abducting and gang-raping the 18-year-old girl whose body was allegedly dumped down an abandoned mineshaft.
