New vests to make patrollers stand out on the streets

In support of the anti-crime operations in Boksburg, Pastor Stephen du Plessis, of New Beginnings Care Centre has on August 19 donated 40 CPF reflective vests to the Boksburg SAPS Sector Four community patrollers.

The high-visibility clothing was handed over to the patrollers by Boksburg SAPS’ Sandra Cloete, the Sector Four commander W/O Lucky Raboshaba and the head of visible policing, Lieut Col Khumbulani Ndaba, on August 18.

The community safety patrollers are working with the police to combat crime in our communities, as part of an anti-crime initiative by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety.

Yes, they are not fully fledged police officers, but along with the police, the army of community patrollers takes to the streets to identified crime hot spots within Sector Four almost every night, risking their lives on a mission to assist the police in combating crime, thereby protecting people’s lives and much-loved properties.

The patrollers are also deployed, alongside the police, to monitor several intersections where smash-and-grabs are most prevalent. They are also the eyes and ears of the police in their respective communities.

During the handover, Sector Four commander W/O Lucky Raboshaba said the patrollers are their additional feet on the ground and are making a difference in the fight against crime within Sector Four.

He also admitted that without the community patrollers, the police alone would not manage to deal with the rampant crime in the areas which fall under the sector.

Raboshaba thanked the volunteers for their commitment and dedication to fighting crime, and inspired them never to give up.

“We have no money or food to give to you, but I want to thank you for being responsible citizens who choose to render your services without being paid. Please keep up the good work,” said Raboshaba. -@FanieFLK
