Over 20 representatives of political parties and independent candidates converged in Germiston last week to sign the electoral code of conduct as a pledge to commit to a free and fair election.
The code of conduct calls on parties to practice political tolerance towards each other during the campaigning period until the elections day.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ekurhuleni’s Municipal Electoral Officer Dr Imogen Mashazi tabled the electoral code of conduct and stated that Ekurhuleni’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was ready to preside over free and fair elections, on August 3.
“There is over one million registered voters on the ground. This is enough for all political parties to get their share of votes.
“There is therefore no need for violence but parties must vigorously engage on peaceful campaigning,” she said.
In terms of safety at polling stations, Dr Mashazi said the IEC will ensure visible police presence to all 626 voting stations.
Power generators are also on standby in case of power supply interruptions.
