Suspected car thief caught trying to smuggle dagga into jail

The Reiger Park police arrested a man they believe is responsible for theft of a motor vehicle which was stolen from the area in April.

However, the suspect surprisingly tried to turn the situation to his advantage.

According to Reiger Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Mashudu Phathela, the 36-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, June 28, and taken to the police station where he was thoroughly searched and his arrests processed.

But when he was being taken to the police van on the way to the holding cells in Boksburg, a substantial amount of dagga fell out of his clothes.

“When police questioned him about the illicit substance, he told them that he was trying to smuggle the dagga into the Boksburg holding cells and Boksburg prison, with the intention to sell them to inmates,” said Phathela.

Police officers were reportedly completely baffled by the discovery, and suspect that someone sneaked in and gave the stuff to the suspect while they were busy processing his arrest at the station.

An additional charge of possession of dagga was added.

The suspect was expected to appear in court on June 29. -@FanieFLK
