The boy, Aqhamile Soul, died after suffering ”serious burn injuries” in his parents’ shack.
This is after a paraffin stove in the shack exploded, on Saturday, June 11.
He was admitted to Tambo Memorial Hospital where he died.
It’s reported that the mother left the baby alone, for an unreported time, while a paraffin stove was burning.
Reiger Park SAPS station commander Col Else Mashinini confirmed the incident, and mentioned that the SAPS’s FCS unit has initiated an investigation of negligence into the baby’s death.
“The case remains under investigation and the mother is facing a count of negligence,” said Mashinini.
q This incident came almost two months after two children were burnt beyond recognition in a shack fire in Road Reserve, Ramaphosa, on Sunday morning, April 17.
The deceased were four-year-old twin sisters, Josephinah and Maria Makgatho.
The incident occurred after the children’s mother left the sisters in the care of their siblings, aged nine and 12, in the shack, and went to work on Sunday morning.
It is alleged that the older children locked the twin sisters inside the shack and went somewhere, before the shack caught alight.
Members of the community reportedly noticed the cloud of smoke coming from the shack. They alerted the emergency services, but it was too late when they arrived.
It is suspected that a stove caused the fire. -@FanieFLK
