Opportunity for artists with BRT’s Public Art Commission
The Ekurhuleni Metro is seeking a variety of artists to be part of the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system's Public Art Commission.

Artists are invited to take part in workshops that will serve as auditions – where a group of artists will be selected to develop proposals for artwork which will feature on the Harambee bus stations.
These designs must be closely linked to the BRT system, its name, and the history of Ekurhuleni.
According to Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, designing artwork for the Harambee BRT route provides an opportunity to harness and create a cross-section of visual artists, designers, performers, dancers, story tellers and poets who are also commuters, future commuters and cultural producers within their communities.
“Working with this group will create content for the artwork on the Harambee BRT stations through various streams,” said Gadebe.
“The metro will be treated as the studio and canvas where artist-researchers will take to the streets not only to create interest and participation, but also to collect experiences and stories that can be used to develop the artwork for the stations.”
Harambee, a Swahili word which means ”working together”, is the official name of the City of Ekurhuleni’s BRT system.
Public art briefing session venues start from May 30 to June 3.
Such venues include Germiston – Germiston Country Club (June 2, 9am); Katlehong – Tsholo Hall (June 3, 9am) and Vosloorus – J Dumane Site Hall (June 3, 1pm).
