Shack-dwellers pay R250 for illegal power connection

A resident of Reiger Park is concerned about illegal electricity connections to a nearby informal settlement

The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said a house in Buzzard Crescent has three cables running underground from the property, connecting up 40 shacks in Road Reserve, which pays R250 each month to the property owner.

In addition to the danger posed by illegal connections, his other concern is that the transformer is burdened and often explodes as a consequence, leaving them without power for days.

He claims to have written a couple of emails to the electrical department but with no reply.

The Advertiser contacted the Ekurhuleni metro regarding the matter.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said they are aware of the problem.

“We are applying the necessary processes and solutions to remedy the situation experienced by residents in that particular area,” said Gadebe.
