Local camera club grows in leaps and bounds

The Boksburg Camera Club which has operated for at least 35 years has grown steadily and now numbers 75 members.

According to chairman Percy Mitchell, today it is one of the largest photo clubs in South Africa and is regularly graded as one of the top five clubs in the country.

The club meets for its monthly meeting and competition every second Monday of the month at 7pm at the Laerskool Baanbreker in Boerneef Street in Parkrand.

Members enter the competition by uploading their photos electronically using “PhotoVaultOnline,” an internet application which aids the running of all photo clubs and photo competitions in South Africa.

“When members join the club they are first graded at 1 Star and progressively work up to 5 Star. Assessment criteria become more onerous the higher the grading,” said Mitchell.

“Photos are then assessed by external judges trained by the Photographic Society of South Africa to use standard criteria for each star grading.

“The judges explain their assessments first complimenting the good aspects and then explaining why they mark the photo down.

“This system ensures every person learns good photographic techniques.”

Mitchell said judges start the evening first with an interesting talk on some aspect of photography and usually display their own work.

“It should be noted the club also organises workshops on various photographic topics and field outings which vary in length from one day, to a weekend or longer.

“An autumn workshop was recently held over a weekend in Clarens and a longer trip to Namibia has been organised.”

The Boksburg Camera club welcomes all visitors to their club evenings at which supper and refreshments are served (the meal is funded by club fees).
