Local hip hop artists make sure the spirit of Hani lives on

Two local young hip hop artists have released a single in memory of the fallen leader of the SACP, Chris Hani.

Childhood friends Thabo Motloung (Cash), from Dawn Park, and Thabo Marabe (Reezy), from Boksburg North, teamed up in 2012 to work on their debut album, titled First Impression, which will be released soon.

The album also features the tribute song to Hani.

Their genre of music is a mixture of underground and commercial hip-hop, with Reezy weighing in with the lyrical content, while Cash adds the “candy coating” beats that set the sound ablaze.

According to Motloung, Hani was a game changer, so they are also see themselves as game changers, by introducing progressive hip hop.

“We wanted to pay homage to Hani, make people dance at the same time and also put Dawn Park on the map,” Motloung said.

The duo worked with artist Wizdomination, who gave the Hani song a Limpopo feel, for everyone to enjoy and to be inspired.

The duo said that what sets them apart is that they don’t conform to the status quo, as they stick to what works for them.

Marabe said their debut album includes songs like “Turn it up” and “It’s all good”, which have already been flighted on radio.

The pair have also performed on YoTV, Morning Live, Café Culture in Fourways and at a festival, where they opened the show for Metro FM award winner Zakwe.

Motloung said they have gown as artists, no longer performing on broken wood crates or on dusty sports grounds, but on big stages.

“We are grateful for the public’s positive reviews and their constant support,”he added.

The Chris Hani track will be available on Reezy/Cash Facebook pages, on twitter @cashandreezy and on itunes, in the coming weeks.
