Joint operation leads to murder suspects’ arrests, seizure of stolen goods
Police carried out an anti-crime operation, targeting illegal firearms, on March 9.
The operation resulted in the seizure of suspected stolen goods, dangerous weapons, a toy gun and the arrest of two Lesotho nationals, believed to be part of a gang involved in the Boksburg illegal mining violence which has left dozens of people dead.
A murder case, related to the illegal mining turf war in Boksburg, prompted the Germiston Organised Crime Unit and the EMPD Task Team to conduct the raid on the Road Reserve informal settlement, in Ramaphosa.
As part of the major operation, officers acting on an anonymous tip-off raided the informal settlement during the early hours of March 9.
Police reportedly found the two suspects sleeping in their shack.
Upon searching the shack, officers found illegal mining equipment and dangerous weapons, including a sword and a lifelike toy gun.
They also found goods suspected to be stolen, including overalls.
The suspects allegedly told the police that the overalls are supplied to illegal miners, to wear when working underground.
The suspects are facing a number of charges, including murder, possessing an imitation firearm and possession of suspected stolen property.
They will also be linked to several cases of armed robbery that took place in the Boksburg, Benoni and Germiston areas. -@FanieFLK
