Man sentenced to 35 years for rape, robbery

Zandisile Solomon Marosha (29) was handed a hefty prison sentence on March 8.

Marosha was convicted of rape, housebreaking with intent to rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

On June 29, 2013, the accused broke open and entered the property of Eunice Bengu in Vosloorus, raped her and stole her cellphone at knifepoint.

He was subsequently arrested and pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court.

However, the court found him guilty as charged after DNA samples taken from the scene, including the semen, matched his 99,9 per cent.

The court heard that there was one in a trillion chance that the DNA could be of someone else other than Marosha.

The victim impact statement was also read and the court heard that the victim is now unable to socialise following the incident.

She is also petrified of staying alone and she locks herself in the house before sunset.

Her happiness has been taken away.

The accused has no previous conviction and the court sentenced him to 8 years for housebreaking with intent to rape (count 1), 20 years for rape (count 2) and 15 year for robbery with aggravating circumstances (count 3).

The court ordered that the sentence on count one run concurrently with the sentence on count three.

This means he has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.

Magistrate Sijren Harichand presided and prosecutor Nkosazana Tykeu represented the state.
