Sweet send off for Dawn Park Primary School principal

A new chapter began at the Dawn Park Primary School on February 12 as staff members and pupils bid farewell to outgoing principal Gert Basson and welcomed Vusi Motaung as the new head of the school.

The day was filled with joy and sadness at the same time as Luana Gair (admin staff member), Sibongile Plaatjies (HOD) and Vincent Mmemezi (IT staff member) also bid farewell.

Having started his career at Oosrand Secondary in 1986, Basson was the principal at Dawn Park Primary School since 1999.

He also taught at Goedehoop Primary and Reiger Park Secondary schools before moving to Dawn Park Primary.

“It was at this school that I really expressed myself as a teacher and the passion for teaching was ignited within me.

“Dawn Park is where I discovered that I might be the only source of hope for the learners.

“This is where I realised that the education of every child, especially the black child, should not be compromised in any way.

“The community in Dawn Park saw my potential, commitment and dedication and as a result I became the second principal of the school and this was a humbling experience,” Basson said.

According to Basson, his vision was to see Dawn Park Primary become the best teaching and learning institution with new innovative teaching methods in Ekurhuleni.

In 2014 his vision was realised as they introduced e-learning at Dawn Park Primary, taking the school into a new era of education.

“I want to thank the Dawn Park community for the trust they had in me and for the opportunity they had given me to serve them for these past 17 years,” Basson said.
