Clamp down on illegal gold panners continues

Brakpan SAPS Cluster, EMPD, Mapogo Security, Home Affairs and Ekurhuleni Peace Corps, continued their blitz on illegal miners over the weekend.

The joint operation started on Thursday, November 12, when members of the organisations involved arrested 20 suspected illegal gold panners while also confiscating their mining equipment.

The operation, aimed at clamping down on illegal mining, saw the team storming the area again on November 13 and 14.

Although no illegal miners were arrested over the weekend at least eight illegal immigrants were arrested during the raids.

According to the police it appears as if the miners were aware that the police were coming, because as the police approached the site miners fled in all directions, mainly into the bushes along the golf field.

The police, however, said the operation against people contravening environmental legislation will continue until this illegal activity comes to an end.

The illegal mining has left the area riddled with a number of pits and trenches.- @FanieFLK
