CONGRATULATIONS! 60 years of love and patience

Love helped to conquer the hardships of life faced by a Ravenswood couple who have been together for 60 years and are still head-over-heels in love with each other.

On November 5, Jacobus Johannes Fick (83) and and his wife Eliza Margaret (79) celebrated six decades, with their family at their side.

They were married in the NG Kerk, in their home town of Hermanus, in 1955.

In 1956 they immigrated to Northern Rhodesia, and then to Bulawayo, in 1962, before returning to South Africa in 1979.

Their grandchild, Nicole Evans, said: “Their love for one another is strong and their strength and determination to overcome all of life’s hurdles is truly inspiring.

“With grandma Eliza being in cancer remission and grandpa Jacobus currently undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer, they never stop fighting to stay together.

“And, despite their past and current health battles, they are still there for their family, no matter what.”

According to Evans, true love does exist and it lasts a lifetime, and she aspires to a marriage such as that of her grandparents.

“I wish them good health and many more years to come,” she added.

Johannes said that what kept them going through all the years, in the good times and the times of storms, is that they showed love and affection for one another and that they never went to bed without making up after an argument.

Elize added that they never raised their hands to one another and that they always did things together.

“We had a fantastic time in our younger days, travelling to Europe, America, Thailand and Mauritius,” she said.

The couple have been blessed with two children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
