What’s killing all the ducks in Impala Park Dam?

The mallards or wild ducks are dying in large numbers at the Dam in Mystere Avenue, Impala Park.

Resident Kevin Phillips has to date recorded a total of 22 ducks that have died since last week Wednesday.

Phillips, who has been feeding the ducks for ages now, said he found 12 of them lying dead on November 4.

“I disposed them off but last night (November 8) when I came to feed and check on the other ducks I found another 10 lying dead,” he said.

When the Advertiser visited the dam today (November 9), a total of six ducks, including two baby ducks were still lying dead along the shore.

Phillips has no idea if they are being poisoned, affected by the drought or if there is something wrong with the water.

He was, however, doubtful if the problem is in the water for he hasn’t spotted any dead fish yet.

All the dead birds have no visible wounds.

Phillips said he has been trying to contact the SPCA regarding the matter without success.

The Advertiser alerted the SPCA and the Ekurhuleni Metro to the situation.
