Rule of law relaxes as revelers party on North Rand Road

It appears as if the strong arm of the law took a backseat as hundreds of people partied heavily in North Rand Road and surrounding streets on the night of October 3.

Revelers who could not make it into the Spring Fiesta music festival , at Wild Waters, parked their cars in the streets, partied, braaied and publicly drank alcohol with impunity.

In a video recorded by resident Jose Melenes, revelers can be seen going about their business, drinking publicly and braaing on pavements.

Melenes said he went back to do this video with his response car, after people threw a beer bottle at his bakkie when he was on the way home earlier in the night.

“I was told that this event would be monitored by police, but only one police car drove past when I did the recording,” he said.

Melenes asked if it’s not illegal to drink in public as well as make open braai fires, especially on the streets.

The aftermath was clear for everyone to see as streets were littered with all sorts of rubbish, including broken bottles.

Like many other residents, Melenes would like to know what was happening with policing on Saturday night.

The Advertiser enquired with the Boksburg North SAPS and the EMPD, especially about whether anyone was arrested for public drinking.

Boksburg North SAPS spokesperson Lieut Juanita Coetzer said the police’s Public Order Policing Unit was deployed in the area.

She was not certain if anyone was arrested for public drinking.

She did, however, confirm that a few cases of robbery and theft were opened.

The EMPD and the Ekurhuleni Metro have not yet responded to our enquiries.
